For centuries, clay tiles have been made from fired clay and have protected homes and buildings. Specifically, clay tile roofs are waterproof, fireproof, and resistant to wind and steam. They insulate against heat and noise and are environmentally friendly. Clay roof tiles offer the best quality/price combination and La Escandella tiles come with 50 to 100 year warranties.

The Curved 2-piece tile, or Mission Barrel, is the classic clay roof known throughout Mediterranean Europe and Spanish missions of the southwestern U.S.

Installation Details

  1. Curved-Installation Details-Ridge

    Ridge

    • Ridge tiles must be installed lap facing away from the prevailing winds, in order to assure water tightness.
    • Field tiles at top course should be secured directly either into the deck or top batten with stainless ring screw nails or similar.
    • All ridges and hips shall be covered with self-adhesive Alu-Roll, La Escandella Aluminum roll for hip and ridges (CAM01), or similar approved breathable waterproof underlayment. Underlayment should be secured over the ridge nailer with non-corrosive roofing nails.
    • Apply ridge tiles with a minimum overlapping of 5cm (2″) throughout the ridgeline facing away from the prevailing wind-driven rain.
  2. Curved-Installation Details-Hip

    Hip

    • Hip tiles must be installed in the same way as in the ridge.
    • Field tiles must be cut parallel to the hip line and secured.
    • All ridges and hips shall be covered with self-adhesive Alu-Roll, La Escandella Aluminum roll for hip and ridges (CAM01), or similar approved breathable waterproof underlayment.
    • Air should be able to flow through the ridge and hip area. Be sure not to close these off with mortar or similar. Closing them off could result in cracks, peeling off, etc. in freezing and thawing cycles.
  3. Curved-Installation Details-Valley

    Valley

    • Both Valley and eave line channel are particularly vulnerable to water migration and leakage. Valleys should have a clear and unobstructed pathway for quick water drainage.
    • Install valley battens on each side of the valley crease. Alu-Roll Valley (CAM18), or similar approved adhered waterproof valley underlayment, shall be laid vertically up all valleys in addition to other required underlayment that should be fixed by using glue, resin or similar.
    • Where valley intersects with ridge line, apply Alu-Roll Valley (CAM18), or similar approved underlayment, which should be covered by the ridge tile. Valley should be extended along the eaves to overhang the fascia board by 5cm (2″) or over the gutter.
    • Tiles should be laid parallel to the valley line, at same relative angle, and should overhang the valley battens by at least 10cm (4″).
    • Tiles at each side of the valley crease should be laid to provide a minimum 15cm (6″) width gap (tiles should held back minimum 7.5cm (3″) from the center of the valley each way).
    • Valley tiles must be secured.
    • Proper Valley flashing installation is required to ensure water tightness in order to avoid cracks, peeling off, etc.
  4. Curved-Installation Details-Eave

    Eave

    • The tiles structuring the eave will have a min. 5cm (2″) and max. 8cm (3.15″) overhang at the eave.
    • A booster tile is set and fastened over the lower edge of each pan tile. A starter tile is then fastened over the booster tile at the eave.

Laid Method

Visum3 roof tile is laid on a discontinuous frame or battens, which are fixed by building a batten and counter batten deck, or attached directly to the frame (Fig. 1).

Laying Visum3 roof tile uses the broken bond method (also referred to as the cross bond method):

  1. The Starter course begins with a Visum3 Right Side Start Course Klinker (Q107). This accessory includes a metallic part to direct the water to a gutter (Fig. 2). Then continue with full Visum3 tiles for the rest of the course.
  2. The second course starts with a Visum3 Right Side Start Course (Q99) followed by a Visum3 Right Half Roof Tile (Q100), creating a cross bond visual effect. Then continue with full Visum3 tiles for the rest of the course, ending on the left side with the Visum3 Left Half Roof Tile (Q102) and its Left Side Course (Q101).
  3. The process should be repeated, alternating steps A and B, until the ridge is reached.
  4. At the top course beneath ridge line, the excess of Q99 Right Side Course must be cut (Fig. 3).
